Abstract

Larval fish composition and abundance were analyzed during the winter (March) and autumn (November) of 2005 to investigate which environmental conditions and mesoscale oceanographic processes affect larval fish assemblages’ distribution in the Gulf of California. The overall pattern was mostly a latitudinal gradient with at least two larval fish assemblages (temperate and tropical) strongly associated to the sea surface temperature spatial distribution pattern. The integration of these results with previous investigations in the region, lets us to confirm that the northern and southern fish larvae assemblages extend and contract their distribution ranges according to the latitudinal displacement of the 21°C isotherm (sea surface temperature), which we identified as a valuable criterion to establish the southern distribution limit of the temperate fish larvae assemblage, and the 18°C as the northern limit of the tropical fish larvae assemblage. However, this general pattern its maintained only in absence of mesoscale oceanographic features (upwelling and eddies) that promote temporal enhance of larval drift from the coast to the central region of the Gulf, particularly during the November when longitudinal gradients were stronger than in March.
